How to use your Plans: Supplemental Insurance

Plans Starting Soon – What do I do now that I’m Enrolled: Supplemental Plans

This article has to do with supplemental insurance plans. If you’re new to VSP, MetLife Dental, or Sharp Healthcare, check this article linked here.

If you signed up for or changed any of your SDPEBA plans this recent Open Enrollment then your plans are starting soon or may have already started. Check out this article to quickly see what you might want to get done when before or around your plans start date.

Aflac

When it comes to Aflac the most important thing you need to do is remember to use it. If you’re like me and use your phone’s calendar app for doctor’s appointments, I always try to add a note for the day after my appointment to file an Aflac claim.

You should program SDPEBA’s number into your phone: 888-315-8027 and call us after any injury, accident, or regular checkup. Odds are you can get paid by Aflac. If you aren’t sure, you can email us anyway and check: [email protected]. You could also check out the Aflac brochures listed on our website https://www.sdpeba.org/archive/benefits/active/aflac.

If you want to learn more about how to get started with Aflac, check out this quick video from Will and Chris our resident Aflac specialists (just know that this video is from last year and dates might be different): https://www.sdpeba.org/news/peba-talk/aflac--what-do-i-do-now-that-im-enrolled-peba-talk

Identity Guard

Once you’ve signed up for Identity Guard, you should receive an email from them within 2-3 weeks! This email leads to account set up and will eventually take you to your identity guard dashboard. If you haven’t received an email from them after signing up, email us via [email protected] or give us a call 888-315-8027.

Once you’re in, you’ll be directed toward an identity questionnaire. You’ll want to fill that out as soon as possible. Remember, the more information you put into Identity Guard, the more they’ll be able to help you. Since Identity Guard offers a variety of services, you can explore each tab on the dashboard and see what you need to do in order to get started with that service. I highly recommend you take some time to explore all of Identity Guard’s features.

If you have had Identity Guard for a while and haven’t explored it in the past year, you really should! They’ve added new features! Check out a list here: https://www.sdpeba.org/news/city/walkthrough-of-new-identity-guard-features

Will also put together a video last year with a member of the Identity Guard team on how to get started! It’s really quick and to the point! Check out the link below!

MetLife Legal Plans

When you sign up for MetLife Legal you should get an email within two weeks of your next pay period. If you didn’t, contact SDPEBA by emailing [email protected] or by calling 888-315-8027.

Once you’re signed up you have two options: you can go through their website, or you can go through their phone line. Depending on the time of year, the phone line might be slower (cases tend to pick up around December and January). Regardless, we recommend you make an account at www.legalplans.com so that way you can follow along with what the representative on the phone is saying! Their number is (800) 821-6400, if you lose that just head back to the MetLife Legal homepage on SDPEBA’s site, we have all the information you need filed on there.

Regardless, you’ll be able to choose what “services” you’re looking for, such as Will and Trusts, Real Estate, and more. The website will walk you through that!

If you want some more quick info, check this video Will made last year! We also have other Legal Plan PEBA talks, we really recommend you check them out if you have this plan!

Pet Insurance

Once you’re enrolled, your plan will start the following month. Once you’re in, you’re in! Nationwide Pet Insurance will send you a policy packet, but your plan is already started.

In order to actually USE your plan, you’ll need to file claims after going to the vet or getting covered services. We really recommend you go to Nationwide’s site and set up an account on their website or through their app. This will help you get access to claim forms and find information about your plan.

Members also have access to a Vet Helpline, links to the helpline are available via the website or the app. We recommend the app as it allows you to share pictures directly with your vet!

For more information on getting started check out this video below that Will made! It’s quick and to the point!
