What to Know About Open Enrollment

What to know about Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment also known as “OE” is an event where you’re able to add, remove, or change your benefits with SDPEBA, your association, and the City/County. While some of our benefits can be added or changed year-round, many of them can only be changed during this 1-2 month window, but don’t fret! We’ll make it as easy as possible so you can take your time and make the right decisions for you and your family.

What do I need to do for OE?

First, we highly recommend you check out plan changes. For SDPEBA based plans, we will release these as an article in September and include it in our open enrollment guidebook that will be mailed directly to you before open enrollment starts.

Second, we suggest you look at your own plans, are you happy with them? Is there anything you would like to change? Maybe you’re an active employee who is using an Aflac plan a lot and want to go from low to high payouts, or maybe you feel like you would be better off with a lower tier medical plan, or a PPO instead of an HMO for your dentist. Since everyone is different there’s no “right” choice for insurance, but if you need any help going over your current plans you can always email [email protected] or call 888-315-8027.

Third, you can look at plans you don’t have that are on offer. For example, if you have pets we have a very popular new pet insurance plan through MetLife. We also have a legal plan that can make getting a will/trust very affordable! There are a lot of other plans on offer, so skim through the guide or check out the SDPEBA website and your employer’s website for more plans to see if any would be a good fit for you.

And finally, make the changes. To change your PEBA plans, it’s very easy! You can do it through our online forms (which will be emailed to you once OE starts), or you can call us 888-315-8027.

For your non-SDPEBA plans, you’ll need to go through your employer or SAP if you’re a City employee, your employer if you’re a County employee, or SDCERs if you’re a retiree.

Enrollment opens for PEBA plans on 9/16.
