What is SDCCE?

SDCCE is a string of 7 colleges that are part of the San Diego Community College network. They offer ESL classes, GED programs, and most importantly, vocational training. Last year, Will Stover sat down with Tavaris Franklin, an SDCCE rep, and broke down the basics of what the college represents and does! Some of the dates in this video are from 2021, but the information is still great!

Note: Tavaris tells you to go to an older website. The new website is https://sdcce.edu/

One of the coolest things about SDCCE to me is their wide array of classes. Whether you want to learn how to do plumbing or automotive repair to save on bills, or if you want to take some art classes, SDCCE has you covered.

Why sign up for SDCCE?

Like we said, there are dozens of classes and academic areas that are available to

Career Skills

From fashion design to automotive repair, there are a lot of amazing skills you can learn at SDCCE. Some highlights include: welding, plumbing, and HVAC certification; business and accounting classes; and healthcare classes.

One of my favorites is their grant writing courses. If you want to make money on the side or start helping local non-profits, grant writers are always in high demand! Plus, the work is usually fun!

Life Skills

If you’re just looking to learn, there are some other amazing classes that offer applicable skills at SDCCE. If you’re looking to get into the arts, SDCCE offers creative writing, art, and music courses. If you’re looking for something more practical, they also offer classes that teach DIY skills such as plumbing/automotive repair. And if you know anyone who is looking to learn English, why not check out their free ESL program?

We recommend you look through their course catalogue to see more and get an idea of what they offer! https://www.sdccd.edu/students/class-search/cesearch.html

Emeritus Classes (for 55+)

The SDCCE offers Emeritus Classes for seniors who are looking for social, intellectual, or physical classes. From Tai Chi, to nutrition, to writer’s workshops, to music appreciation, the Emeritus program really has something for everyone.

One of their more interesting classes are the ones in the “Law and the Retire” series, where you can learn a lot about legal rights and consumer protection laws surrounding retirees. They also have a Practical Theater class!
