All About Aflac

All about Aflac

Aflac is one of SDPEBA’s most popular providers, but it is also the provider we get the most questions about. This article will go over what Aflac is, what plan options there are, and how to use the plan.

What is Aflac

There are 4 different Aflac plans: Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, and Life Insurance. Life insurance is different from the other three plans, to learn more about your life insurance options through SDPEBA click here.

The main thing to know about Aflac is that it is “claims based,” which means you don’t have to worry about insurance cards or making sure you’re “in-network” before you use the plan. The best way to think about it is that your plan kicks in after specific “events.” These events differ depending on the plans, for example: if you break a bone, that will be covered by the accident plan; if you experience something like a heart attack, cancer, or a stroke, that’s covered by the critical illness plan; if you’re admitted into the hospital, you’re covered by the hospital indemnity plan.

You can mix and match these plans in any way you want. Our accident plan is the most popular, especially with SDPEBA members who have physical jobs (police officers, fire fighters, and lifeguards) or people who participate in recreational sports. Our critical illness plan is more situational, but provides a lot of peace of mind for people with a family history of critical illnesses. Our hospital plan is very popular with expecting mothers or people who have upcoming surgeries.

How do I use the plan?

After a covered event all you’ll need to do is submit a claim online. But don’t worry! SDPEBA is here to help, we also put together an article that goes in depth on how to file a claim step by step later in this newsletter.

If you want the quick rundown, all you need to do is make an account by going to www.aflac.com/login and making an account. From there, you can access “MyAflac,” which is an online web portal that tells you exactly what you need to file a claim.
