Should you get Dental Work before Retiring? – Road to Retirement
If you’re planning to retire soon you might be thinking about what insurance plans you’ll be bringing into retirement, and while there are dental insurance options for retirees, there might be some restrictions or differences, and also you’ll have to pay for those plans out of pocket or with pension deductions rather than through an employer’s flex plan.
MetLife Dental is a great example of how there can be some little differences between active and retiree plans. The SDPEBA MetLife Dental PPO plan has a different annual maximum payout for active employees when compared to retirees. What does that mean? Annual maximums are the most a provider will cover in a given year, so if you hit that threshold, you will need to pay more ahead of time.
So, consider this a PSA, if you’re planning to retire soon and you need serious dental work. Check the differences between your current plan and the plans offered to you after retiring. And if you decide to get anything done with the dentist, get a treatment estimate from your provider beforehand!
Another insurance plan to consider getting before retirement is Aflac. Aflac is unavailable to retirees, but if you get the plan before you retire, you keep it and the rate you pay stays the same. We offer Accident, Hospital, and Critical Illness plans. These plans are extremely useful, especially if you plan on becoming a retiree who gets really into sports.
