Associations you can Join – Road to Retirement

SDPEBA partners with various retiree groups that you can join once you retire. These groups offer additional benefits such as: discounts for activities, socialization opportunities, retiree advocacy, and administration support. These groups are built to not only support your transition into retirement, but also keep you up to date and protected during your journey into golfing, boating, gardening, or whatever else you do after working.

SDCERS – San Diego City Employee’s Retirement System is a group that manages your pension and provides assistance during your retirement. SDCERS offers retirement counselors and has a call center that will answer any questions you have about the retirement process.

SDCERS also keeps retirees up to date by sending out their biannual newsletter that contains all of the important information you’ll want to know while retired. They also have great tools online that go over retirement plans, help you create a budget, and teach you about topics like Medicare!

CSDREA – The City of San Diego Retired Employee Association often just called “the REA” is a special interest group dedicated to advocating for retiree rights. The REA is also your direct line to the City of San Diego and SDCERS since they frequently send representatives to both SDCERS and the City council.

The REA also hosts great meetings monthly that feature amazing guest speakers who usually talk about something interesting having to do with the City or retirees in general. They also have a volunteer program dedicated to giving back to people in need!

RFPA – The Retired Fire and Police Association accepts retired police officers, firefighters, and lifeguards. The RFPA works alongside the REA as a watchdog group making sure the City and SDCERS are doing right by retirees.

They also raise money for local charities, host memorial services, and support local fire/police/lifeguard families who recently lost a loved one.

You might also want to know about…

CareCounsel – This group is a support center that helps explain healthcare to retirees making it easier to understand and access. Between SDPEBA’s call center and CareCounsel, you’ve got a wealth of advocates available to help make sure you’re making the right choice when it comes to benefits.

CalPERS – The California Public Employees retirement system is essentially the SDCERS of the state of California. There are unique circumstances where you can establish reciprocity from CalPERS and have your retirement managed by them instead of SDCERS. While this might be advisable for some, it definitely is not for everyone. We recommend you learn more about it on SDCERS’s site linked here and bring it up to your Retirement Counselor if you’re interested.
